This program aims to secure a sustainable future for Australia's high growth areas and is one of the measures under Sustainable Australia - Sustainable Communities: A Population Strategy for Australia. The focus of this program is to protect matters of national environmental significance in selected high growth regions. The Lower Hunter will be the first region to benefit from this program. Hunter Region. We've finalised a Regional Plan centred on a prosperous community, healthy environment and attractive lifestyle choices. The Draft Hunter Regional Plan and the Draft Plan for Growing Hunter City have been informed by community and stakeholder feedback from the consultation on T he Lower Hunter over the next 20 years Discussion Paper and evidence on housing, jobs, biodiversity and infrastructure in the region. The Draft Hunter Regional Plan , which outlines a vision to grow and diversify the Hunter economy over the next 20 years so that it remains the biggest and most productive regional economy in Australia, was on exhibition from 25 November to 24 March For the first time strategic planning for the Lower Hunter, Upper Hunter and Great Lakes is consolidated in this plan. We wish to thank the Hunter community, local councils, community groups, and peak bodies for having their say on the Draft Hunter Regional Plan and the Draft Plan for Growing Hunter City. At the census the combined population of the region was , Within that, the Hunter region is almost as large, and includes most of the wine-producing areas, excluding the metropolitan area of Newcastle and nearby coastal areas, some national parks, and any land that was in the Mudgee Shire at the western heights of the catchment. The Hunter wine region is one of Australia 's best known wine regions , playing a pivotal role in the history of Australian wine as one of the first wine regions planted in the early 19th century.
